FC Schalke 04 is a German football club from the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia, founded on 4 May 1904. It plays at the Veltins-Arena, a ground of 62,273 places, and competes in the 2. Bundesliga. Schalke won seven German championships, six of them in the 1930s and 1940s, and the UEFA Cup in 1997. It plays in royal blue and white and is nicknamed Die Knappen, the miners, after the coal pits the club grew out of. Its membership is among the largest in world football.
