Deportivo Alavés is a Spanish football club from Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country, founded on 23 January 1921 as Sport Friends Club. It plays at Mendizorroza, a ground of about 19,800 places, and competes in La Liga. The club reached the UEFA Cup final in 2001, losing 5-4 to Liverpool after extra time in one of the most celebrated finals of its era, and the Copa del Rey final in 2017. It plays in blue and white stripes and is nicknamed Babazorros, the bean sacks, an old name for the people of Vitoria.
