Sunderland AFC is an English club from Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, formed in 1879 by schoolteachers. It plays at the Stadium of Light, a ground of about 48,000 places built on a former colliery, and competes in the Premier League. The club has won six league titles, the last in 1936, and the FA Cup twice, most famously in 1973 as a second-division side. It plays in red and white stripes and is nicknamed the Black Cats. Its crowds stayed among the largest in England even in the third tier.
