AZ, in full AZ Alkmaar, is a Dutch football club from Alkmaar in North Holland, formed on 10 May 1967 by the merger of Alkmaar '54 and FC Zaanstreek. It plays at the AFAS Stadion, a ground of 19,500 places, and competes in the Eredivisie. AZ won the national championship in 1981 and 2009 and the KNVB Cup four times, and reached the UEFA Cup final in 1981. It plays in red and white and is nicknamed De Kaasboeren, the Cheese Farmers, after the cheese market that made Alkmaar famous. Its academy is among the best regarded in the country.
